5 Reasons to consider Spot over Trupanion
1. Trupanion doesn’t cover exam fees. Spot does.
How many times in the past year have you brought your pet to the vet for a simple exam? If you’re like most pet parents, the answer is probably “several.” Exam fees are a part of most vet visits. They can add up over a year when you see the vet multiple times.
Luckily, there’s an option to save you a lot of money. Trupanion doesn’t cover exam fees, even when the veterinary care is related to a covered condition.
There’s another option: With Spot insurance policies, you can get reimbursed for exam fees related to a covered condition. You’ll get to save money on exams and can allocate that elsewhere to take care of your pet.
2. Trupanion per-condition deductibles vs. Spot annual deductibles
With a Trupanion policy, you must meet your deductible each time your pet is diagnosed with a new condition. For example, if you take your dog in for allergies in the spring, vomiting in the summer, and an ear infection in the winter, you could need to meet your deductible three times a year.
You might not be saving as much money as you could be if your pet insurance provider used an annual deductible again. Wondering which providers use an annual system?
Spot uses an annual deductible. After you meet your selected amount for the year, you will be reimbursed at your set reimbursement rate for the rest of the year.
3. Trupanion has a 30-day waiting period; Spot’s is nearly half of that.
Trupanion’s illness coverage waiting period is 30 days. Anything that your pet develops or is diagnosed with during that 30-day waiting period is considered a pre-existing condition. Their insurance does not cover these.
On the contrary, Spot’s waiting period is 14 days for Accident & Illness plans. There is no waiting period for any of Spot’s add-on Preventive Care coverage.* Your pet deserves to be covered fast, so they can get quality care quickly. Luckily, this is a cornerstone of Spot Pet Insurance’s beliefs. That’s why our 14 period waiting period includes treatments and diagnostic tests for orthopedic conditions like hip dysplasia.
4. Trupanion plans don’t offer a multi-pet discount. Spot does.
Do you have multiple pets? Ask many pet owners. They’ll share that one furry friend simply isn’t enough! If you have several pets, it makes sense to opt for a provider that will give you a discount for those additional pets.
If you add a second, third, fourth, etc., pet to your plan, you will need to pay the full premium price for each of them on Trupanion policies. This goes for Trupanion dog insurance as well as Trupanion dog insurance.
With Spot, all added pet policies get a 10 percent discount.** Because, let’s face it, all of your animals deserve quality care from Spot.
5. Trupanion doesn’t offer preventive or accident-only options.
Trupanion offers an Accident & Illness plan with the optional add-on of “Recovery and Complementary Care” to provide coverage for alternative wellness treatments (which are included in Spot’s Accident & Illness plan at no extra cost). There are no options for Accident-Only or Preventive Care coverage with Trupanion.
This is not the case with Spot, as you can personalize the coverage your pet has. In addition to offering Accident & Illness coverage, Spot has an Accident-Only option that is a good choice for those looking for a lower-cost premium option to cover just injuries.
Spot also has Preventive Care options* you can add to your healthcare plan. Preventive coverage provides you with a set annual amount for routine care like vaccinations, heartworm, and teeth cleanings.
